Blueprint for Better Health

Our approach

Following the Australian Government’s Fifth National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan is The Blueprint. It is a regional plan for better, integrated mental health, alcohol and other drugs and suicide prevention services and support in Melbourne’s centre, north and west.  Based on the learnings from the Blueprint a comprehensive service plan will be developed which will outline improvements, joint investments and service development between providers in the region.

Fifth National Mental Health Plan

The fifth National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan has eight priority areas. Joint regional planning between Local Hospital Networks and Primary Health Networks is identified as a key priority.

Blueprint for Better Health (a foundation plan)

The Blueprint has identified opportunities, service gaps and regional priorities. Listening to our community, people with lived experience, their carers and families, providers, service partners in the north west Melbourne region. Learning from our environment, data and insights to find opportunities for a better health care system and experience.

Comprehensive Services Plan

Building on the Blueprint, this plan will explore opportunities for joint investments and service development between providers and will outline a range of activities to improve our system.

  • Altogether, close to 700 people were consulted through social media, surveys, focus groups, workshops and interviews to inform the Blueprint. The approach was to ensure a wide and deep engagement with local communities, including people with lived experience and their carers and clinicians.

  • The Blueprint was informed and guided by a reference group of expert advisors from mental health consumer and carer groups, professional peak bodies, and included input from a Local Hospital Network (LHN) group with representatives from each of the region's hospitals that have a mental health service.

People with lived experience, their family and friends

Integral to this process was listening to our community through codesign workshops, surveys, social media, interviews, focus groups, feedback and other consultations. They provided insights and answers to improve the mental health, suicide prevention and AOD service system in our region.

Hospitals and other health organisations

Representatives for the hospitals in our region provided advice and clinical input to validate and test emerging insights.

Peak organisations and expert advisors

A reference group met monthly to oversee the development of our Blueprint. The reference group consisted of experts from peak body organisations. They are guiding the methodology, providing advice on engagement and helping to validate and test emerging insights.
